Milan Design Hub

Originally commissioned by National Geographic.

Situated between the foothills of the Alps and the River Po, the sprawling metropolis of Milan is recognized as Italy’s financial hub and one of the world’s fashion capitals. Glass skyscrapers share the skyline with intricate Gothic spires, shops, and restaurants are nestled among 15th-century canals, and contemporary art museums overlook cobblestoned piazzas.

Held annually, “Fuorisalone” is the most important event in the world related to the topic of design. The term is used to define the events and exhibitions that animate Milan during the Design Week happening in April. On this occasion, many important brands located in the design districts, introduce their new collections and host special events featuring music and the presence of important artists in the design and art fields.

The Fuorisalone is not a fair, it doesn’t have a central organization and it’s not managed by any Institution. It started spontaneously early in the 1980s through companies working in the furnishing and industrial design sectors.

Featuring more than 2,400 exhibitors and over 1,000 events spread all over the city, Design Week opens its doors to creative minds from all over the world.

The Milan Design Week is a moment of excitement, anticipation, and inspiration for the entire city. The energy pulsing through the streets is palpable to thousands of visitors and locals alike who enthusiastically took in all of the events, installations, and venues.
